Glenn N. Smith

REDLANDS, Calif. - Glenn N. Smith, 69, of Redlands, formerly of Marietta, died Monday (July 15, 2002) at Redlands Community Hospital of a heart attack.



He was born Nov. 14, 1932, in Marietta. A retired Army colonel, he was assigned in 1981 to the former Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, Calif., where he worked with the Air Force on developing missile launching projects. He and his wife moved to San Bernardino County upon his assignment to the base, which was closed in 1994. They had lived in Redlands for 21 years. He served in the Army for 32 years and was a member of the Corps of Engineers.
He served two tours in Vietnam and was also stationed in South Korea and Germany. He received the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster. He was also awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptional conduct from Sept. 8, 1981, through June 30, 1985.

After retiring from the Army, he worked as a school inspector for the state architect's office for 10 years. He was also the building inspector for the construction of the Redlands city yards.

A lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America, he was an assistant Scoutmaster and also did Scout training. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest medal given to adults by the Boy Scouts.

He is survived by his wife, Selma Smith, whom he married in 1958; one daughter, Amy Nacimiento of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mary Etta Sutton of Princeton, N.J.; and relatives in the Marietta area.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave., Redlands.
