Not with the Nyctari, those who took Darkseid's passing as their opportunity to take Apokolips and New Genesis - but between themselves.

There's a prophesied child rooted in the same history as the Nyctari, whom some figure an intended vessel for Darkseid as he is now.

Desaad of Apokolips, with Metron's human pawn Maxwell Lord, has taken the child - Orion and Scott Free following.

The setup's even. )

"When we set out to write this book, our goal was to conjure up the deep fright that you have as a kid, the kind that takes your breath away, makes your spine tingle... A primal fear. We thought of classic fairytales—the ones where you're lost in the woods, and something is out there that wants—no, needs—to devour you. And we thought... how could this be scarier? Well, what if it was rooted in reality? You'd be surprised by how many people over the years have scoured the country looking for children to consume... how many real Big Bad Wolves exist." -- Scott Snyder

As Tom DeFalco wrapped up his Fantastic Four run, he laid a few threads to rest, some with more...fanfare than others. Kristoff, for instance, realized he sucked and had no purpose (#410).

'You see, sometimes people [like Doctor Doom] tell you that you're going to take over for them. And then you don't! You just straight up don't!...And now you know what being a legacy [character] is all about!' )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Before anything else, a word of thanks to our esteemed member and former Mod [personal profile] angelophile, for coming to our rescue yet again, as regards the graphics and headers.

Amidst the swirling chaos, watching the Portland, Oregon response to federal troops being sent to deal with their allegedly "crime ridden streets" by staging what might politely be described as weaponised absurdist street theatre (inflatable frog costumes, naked bike rides and many more) has been frankly magnificent. Horrifying they need to, but their style is undeniable.

NYCC gave us a slew of trailers

Star Fleet Academy

Wonder Man

Invincible: Season 4

And information like DC finally releasing the Swamp Thing comic that got cancelled 25 years ago due it's controversial nature (He time travels, meets Jesus and literally becomes the cross on Calvary) which lead to author Rick Vietch quitting DC.

Issue #1'd introduced four teens playing the subconscious VR game Nightmare Cemetery as something outside their daily lives - and then had one of them pulled deeper into it, trapped in a real-world coma, by something within the game.

Issue #2 opened on that kid Pik's family - his sister Birdie, his dad - processing real-world life without him.

" There's no way I can make the rent on my own. " groaned dad.

Birdie asked " Is that really what you're worried about? "

He answered. )

"I think my best Halloween story is The Haunted Mask... It’s the only Goosebumps book inspired by something in real life. When my son, Matt, was real little, it was Halloween time and he was trying on a green, rubber Frankenstein mask in the living room. I’m watching him from the doorway and he pulled the mask down over his face and he couldn’t get it off. I’m watching him — he’s tugging and tugging. I thought, 'What a great idea for a story!' I should have helped him, right? I started making notes." -- R.L. Stine

Here's a televised tale of broadcast brouhaha, as only EC Comics could deliver it.

Warning for suicide.

I doubt this show was ever broadcast live after this. Or possibly at all )
