DONT'T FORGET TITLE PAGE

--

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, persecution means “the act or practice of persecuting especially those who differ in origin, religion, or social outlook.” Persecution because of one’s religious beliefs has always been a topic by which I was held captive. When I was younger I could never believe that people were killed just because they believed in something different. As I grew older I learned about many of the religious persecutions that occurred during the history of the world, such as the Spanish Inquisition, and the holocaust. The most famous of all acts of religious persecution would have to be that of Jesus Christ who was crucified.

I’m fascinated by my family’s history that deals with those oppressed because of their religious beliefs. One reoccurring pattern with my ancestors was that many came to America because of religious persecution in their home countries. On my mother’s side of the family, my ancestors include the Puritans who fled England, the Catholics who fled England for the colony of Maryland, and the French Huguenots. On my father’s side I have the Catholic Flemish who fled Protestant Flanders.

Persecution because of religious beliefs still goes on around the world today. The people of the world can put a stop to this practice, which has gone on long enough, as long as people realize what exactly is going on. In order for people to become aware, some must take it upon themselves to enlighten others of this harmful act.
