In Wisdom Sits in Places the author tries to explain this concept of "speaking with names." I could not quite understand at first what he meant but then I remembered a Star Trek: The Next Generation epsiode where Picard ends up on this planet with a captain of an alien ship. They had problems communicating because the alien's people's way of communicating was relaying old stories and myths that pertain to the situation to formulatet a conversation.
It is easier to understand if you see the episode.
Picard helped me figure out my anthropology reading. This is why Star Trek is greatness.
